MY PALOMAR
What I had in mind was freeze-frames in a film catching the square as it traveled from one sheet to another in sine curve, through alternating light and dark fields until it really does slip off, over and out. I had a wonderful time. This was something where I couldn't make a mistake. Everything rolled off beautifully, not only in the sense of making individually beautiful images but also in their relationship to each other, the way in which each one asserts itself against the other, but cooperates at the same time. It's like having a musical chorus in which every voice has to be exactly right, to be both itself and part of the whole. I was on a roll, and every one I did was telling me, "see, look, take this morsel and that morsel and make another whole one."
The affirmation and joy of doing these prints carried me through the horrors of my life outside the studio....... |
