Wayne's first series takes its inspiration from the stories of Franz Kafka. I marks her development as a painter from the experimental optical works from 1947 to assured and highly finished compositions like Ascension, Cryptic Creatures, Moving Symbols, The Chase and The Hero. The Kafka Series also marks her diagonal movement into lithography and quick evolution of her use of this medium from restatement to refinement of previously painted images.
Although in this series she moved beyond the purely optical experiment to more content-rich work, Wayne continued to explore optical phenomena, particularly the path our eye takes as we read a painting. For example, instead of taking a normal left-right and top-down path, our reading of Cryptic Creatures and Moving Symbols starts in the bottom left corner then follows ascending diagonal loops, indicated by transitional afterimages.
