 COGNITOS
The Cognitos painting were produced for an exhibition at the Armtrong Gallery, New York, in the fall of 1984. Needing a title for the show, Wayne chose Cognitos for its connotation of something known, a sense of recognition without specific identification.
These paintings share several common characteristics: they are painted on canvases prepared years earlier by Douglass Howell, the accomplished papermaker, who built thick, highly textured surfaces from mixtures of gesso, gelatin, and paper; half of them are painted over previously existing paintings, completed in 1968, 1973 and 1983; they have monochromatic but highly active surfaces, often using metallic leaf purchased by the artist in 1948, but not used until this point. They allude to planetary atmospheres and topography in a very general way. |
